How to Make a Red Sangria with Cointreau
A glass of refreshing, homemade red sangria is the perfect drink to enjoy on a hot summer day. And while sangria is traditionally made with Spanish red wine, we like to give ours a French twist by using Cointreau. Cointreau is a brand of triple sec, which is an orange-flavored liqueur. This sweet liqueur is key in giving our sangria its characteristic sweetness and depth of flavor.
In addition to Cointreau, you’ll need a bottle of dry red wine, fresh oranges, lemons, and limes, and a bit of sugar. We like to use a Grenache or Tempranillo for our sangria, but feel free to experiment with your favorite dry red wine. You’ll also need a large pitcher or jug in which to mix everything together.
Start by chopping up the oranges, lemons, and limes into small pieces. Add them to the pitcher along with the sugar and Cointreau. Pour in the red wine and stir everything together. Taste the sangria and add more sugar if you like it sweeter. Cover the pitcher and refrigerate for at least an hour, or overnight if you can.
When you’re ready to serve, add some ice to the pitcher and pour the sangria into glasses. Garnish each glass with a piece of fruit, and enjoy!
