And by the Song dynasty (960-1279), the term “mistress” was no longer used, and these women were simply called “wives.”

Today, the term “mistress” is used to describe a woman who is in a sexual relationship with a married man. It is generally seen as a negative term, as it implies that the woman is secondary to the man’s wife.
