Spanish History
The Spanish Inquisition was established in 1478 by Ferdinand II of Aragon and Isabella I of Castile. The stated purpose of the Inquisition was to maintain Catholic orthodoxy in their kingdoms, but it was also used to root out heresy and to eliminate political opposition. The Inquisition was originally housed in the Aljafería Palace in Saragossa, but in 1485 it was moved to the more permanent headquarters of the Tribunal of the Holy Office of the Inquisition in Madrid.
The Spanish Inquisition was modeled after the Medieval Inquisition, which was used to maintain Catholic orthodoxy in Europe. The Spanish Inquisition, however, was much more brutal and efficient in its operations. The Inquisition employed a network of spies and informers to root out heresy and to eliminate political opposition. The Inquisition also established a system of interrogations and torture to extract confessions from those suspected of heresy.
One of the most famous victims of the Spanish Inquisition was the theologian and philosopher Miguel de Cervantes. Cervantes was arrested in 1559 and accused of heresy. He was imprisoned for five years and was only released after he agreed to recant his heretical beliefs.
The Spanish Inquisition was finally abolished in 1834 by the Regent Maria Christina..See page
